The Tomahawk is a Viper V-10 based motorcycle, a 500 horsepower engine with four wheels beneath it.
Chrysler will be selling the original Tomahawk concept and nine replicas through Neiman Marcus, for up to $555,000 each. The motorcycles cannot be licensed, so they cannot be legally driven on public roads. A Chrysler spokesman told Reuters they were meant as rolling sculptures.
Rumors had the Tomahawk selling for under $200,000, most likely at a loss or breakeven price, for publicity purposes - but still fully drivable. Wolfgang Bernhard, Chrysler's not particularly respected first mate, was said to be enthusiastic about that project, so much so that hundreds were projected to be built at under $200,000 each. They reportedly cost Chrysler over $100,000 to build (admittedly the work is outsourced).
The Dodge Tomahawk can reach 60 miles an hour in about 2.5 seconds, and has a theoretical top speed of nearly 400 mph. Each pair of wheels is separated by a few inches and each wheel has an independent suspension. Bernhard said four wheels were necessary to handle the power from the engine.

The Tomahawk remains on display at auto shows - though well out of reach of the general public, elevated on a special display.

Test Drive : BMW 330i - Temptation on Wheels

Anamit Sen spent a whole day evaluating a BMW 330i in and around Delhi and the NCR. I'm starting this review with a bit of news.

Auto Bild magazine in Germany has just reported that the 2012 version of BMW's 3 Series, which will be the 6th generation of the 3 Series, is ready to be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. The reports say that this new BMW, classified internally as the F30 and going up against the Mercedes C Class, Audi's A4 and Volvo's S60, has borrowed quite a bit in terms of design from the 5 Series. It will break new ground in terms of safety and will have new four-cylinder turbocharged engines. The reports also says that though BMW may not be vorsprung durch technik (borrowing from Audi) or advanced/ahead through technology any more because competitors also have the equivalent of the advantages of Efficient Dynamics, the boffins DO have access to the parts and accessory shelf of the 5 Series. Which means it is quite possible that the F30 may offer features like night vision assistance, heads up display or HUD, lane changing assistance as well as automatic parking.

So how is that bit of news relevant to this driving impression? Well, if you have not noticed yet the car featured here is the BMW 330i Edition Sport, internally classified as the E90. OK, let me explain the internal classification over the years, which starts way back in 1966 when the 1600-2002 series came in as a family saloon. It was sporty too with an 80bhp engine that could reach 96kph in 13 seconds. The 2002 Turbo was part of the 02 Series, with a 170bhp engine and BMW churned these out till 1976. The internal E classification kicked off with the E21 ,the first generation of 3 Series cars, production of which ran from 1976 to 1982. These cars still used small engines, with capacities of 1.6 and 1.8 litres. BMW introduced their first six-cylinder engine in the 3 Series at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1977, the 323i which had 143bhp on tap.

The E30 that followed in 1983 was the second-generation 3 Series. These cars were bigger than the previous generation cars, had more power, but were lighter, the perfect recipe for performance. The 325i topped the range and had a straight-six engine developing 170bhp out of 2.5litres, good for 135mph or 216kph which would be adequate even today. The E30 was especially notable because it was the base for the first M car, known simply as the BMW M3 E30, launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985. This particular car was VERY successful in race trim, winning several touring car championships. The M badge had arrived.

Review: 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Volkswagen is serious about taking on the best in the small-midsize sedan market. So much so, they brought us to the Mosport Driver Development Centre near Bowmanville, Ontario to put the all-new 2012 Jetta GLI through its paces. A sunny day, comfortable sports seats and time on a race track. It doesn’t get much better than this!

The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI comes standard with a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine. Performance rates at 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft. of torque.
Matched to a 6-speed manual transmission or the optional 6-speed automatic Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with Tiptronic and Sport Mode, we spend the afternoon doing hot laps of the track, exploring the outer limits of adhesion and driver confidence. Both are in relative abundance, with the driver holding on as long as the car. It helps that I have taken the Bridgestone Racing School course on this track in the past. If you haven’t as of yet, put it on your Christmas Wish List.

Power assisted front vented and rear solid disc brakes provide excellent stopping power. Safety features include ABS, EBD and HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist). I do experience some amount of brake fade as our time on the track progresses, even running out of brakes once approaching a tight right-hand turn under hard braking. But I chalk this up to racing on a track, rather than the potential for fade during every day driving conditions or even somewhat aggressive stints on a regular basis over winding country roads.

Traction Control is standard featuring a host of acronyms such as ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), EBA (Engine Braking Assist), EDL (Electronic Differential Lock), XDS (Electronic Transverse Differential Lock) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control). Hill hold assist is also included to stop unwanted rollbacks.

Exterior design cues exude the typical Volkswagen front/rear fascia and side profile. But the GLI is no slouch in the styling department. Lines are clean and crisp like a finely tailored suit, business professional, of course, being an upstanding German car.

Upper and lower body character lines add to the professional look, while multi-spoke alloy wheels, an aggressive lower front grille and fog lights let you know there is plenty of sportiness to enjoy underneath the all-business exterior.

Brushed aluminum sport pedals and dead pedal (a place to rest your left foot while not on the clutch) add a sporty touch to what is already a racy interior package. Large, round white on black analogue gauges feature the obligatory speedometer and tachometer, as well as coolant temperature and fuel gauge, outside temperature and much more.

A 3-spoke flat-bottom leather steering wheel with red stitching offers multi-function controls and excellent feedback with electromechanical speed sensitive power steering. It also features telescoping and height adjustment. Additional leather wraps the manual gearshift knob and emergency brake.

Seats are superb, as is rear seat room and trunk space. VW is known for their excellence in space efficiency and roominess; the new GLI takes this to the next level. Power window controls are located where they should be, on the door as part of swooping armrest design element. Power mirrors and door locks are situated directly above. It is so logical to design and interior this way, why do other automakers make it so complicated sometimes?

Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity makes syncing your iPhone easy. A premium AM/FM, 6-disc CD changer with 6.5 inch touch screen, SIRIUS satellite radio and 6 speakers is standard. Upgrades including the RNS 315 Navigation System or the all-out 400 watt Fender premium audio system with 8 speakers and subwoofer.

Driving the all-new 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI on the track and the roads surrounding Mosport, the car impresses with a quietness belying the reasonable price and a ride quality equal to, or in some ways better than, the major competitors from Mazda, Honda and Subaru to name a few.

Priced to start at $27,475 for the manual transmission, Jetta GLI should command a strong following of contented, driving enthusiasts looking for fun, roominess and classic style all rolled into one exceptional package.

Spyker Sells Stake in Saab to Chinese Automaker for $177 Million

It seems Volvo is no longer the only Swedish automaker with fiscal ties to a Chinese car company. Saab announced yesterday that it received some short-term funding courtesy of the Hawtai Motor Group, a Chinese automaker that now holds a 29.9-percent stake in the company.

Billed by the automaker as a “joint venture on manufacturing, technology, and distribution,” the agreement essentially hawks a chunk of Saab-Spyker to the Chinese in order to give Saab the operating liquidity it so desperately needs.

Hawtai’s investment provides the company nearly 150 million Euros ($222 million USD) in funding, but only 120 million Euros ($177 million) are tied to the equity stake itself. The remaining 30 million Euros ($44.3 million) come from a convertible loan issued by Hawtai itself.

This announcement follows last week’s announcement that Saab managed to scrape up 60 million Euros ($88.7 million) in short-term funding, half of which is tied to a new loan from Gemini, a European investment firm that was already a Spyker shareholder. Saab also planned on making a drawdown request to the European Investment Bank for 29.1 million Euros ($43 million).

“Saab is now well financed,” CEO Victor Muller said in a prepared release. “It has secured its short and mid-term financing needs. That puts the credit crunch that the company went through in April to bed.”

Officials tell Automotive News that production within the company’s assembly plant in Trollhattan, Sweden, should resume “early next week.” Even so, the disruption in production makes selling 80,000 Saabs globally by the end of 2011 — already an optimistic goal, to say the least — completely impossible.

It may, however, have an improved means of selling its products in China. While the liason with Hawtai immediately gives Saab some liquidity, it potentially allows the company to expand its Chinese distribution market. Conversely, it theoretically gives Hawtai a consumer-focused offering, allowing it to round out its portfolio, which presently consists primarily of SUVs, trucks, and buses.

Although this appears to be a done deal, Saab notes the agreement is subject to the approval of several parties, including the EIB, the Swedish National Debt Office, and several Chinese regulatory boards.

Leaf and Prius stomp the Volt on greenest car list

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The Chevrolet Volt didn't rank as one of the top-ten "greenest" cars in America, coming at no. 12, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's annual list.

The fully electric Nissan Leaf ranked second among all 2011 model year cars on the same list. First place went to the compressed natural gas powered Honda Civic GX.

Vehicles are ranked according to a "Green Score," factoring fuel economy and emissions, including emissions from electric power plants. The relative impact of a vehicle's manufacture and disposal, based on the car's weight, was also considered.

The top 12 cars include gasoline-powered cars, plug-in cars, gasoline/electric hybrids and natural gas powered vehicles. No diesel cars made the top ranks because of their relatively high emissions compared to very fuel-efficient gasoline-powered cars.

The Volt can run on electricity or gasoline. For the purposes of these rankings, the ACEEE assumed the Volt was driven on plug-in electricity 64% percent of the time and on gasoline 36% of the time. The ratio was based on a standard recommended by the Society of Automotive Engineers, an ACEEE spokeswoman said.

"As a gasoline vehicle, the fuel economy's not stellar," said Shruti Vaidyanathan, a spokeswoman for the ACEEE.

When operating under gasoline power, the Volt gets EPA-rated fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon in the city and 40 on the highway.

That's not as good as the third-ranked Smart ForTwo, which gets 41 mpg on the highway, 33 in the city or the fourth-ranked Toyota Prius, which gets 48 on the highway and 51 in the city.

A car's weight is considered an important factor into the rating system, so the Volt's nearly 3,800 pounds dragged its rankings down. The Chevrolet Cruze Eco, a gasoline-powered car that's otherwise very similar to the Volt but weighs 750 pounds less, ranked 8th on the list. Most of the Volt's additional weight comes from its lithium-ion battery pack.

For electric and hybrid cars the organization accounted for battery weight separately. Nickel-metal batteries used in hybrid cars like the Prius have a greater impact, pound for pound, than the less toxic, but far larger, lithium-ion batteries used in the Leaf and Volt.

Weight accounted for roughly 40 pct of the Volt's overall score.

All told, the Volt ended up ranking lower than six non-hybrid gasoline powered cars.

"I find it kind of laughable," said GM spokesman Rob Peterson when told of ranking and the rational behind it.

Peterson objected to the idea that the Volt's weight counted so heavily against the Volt.

"It's one group's interpretation of a measurement of 'green'," he said.

The ACEEE gave every 2011 model year a "Green Score" base on its overall environmental impact. Among the lowest-scoring vehicles of all were the Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Suburban.

The ACEEE is a Washington-based non-profit group dedicated to "advancing energy efficiency as a means of promoting economic prosperity," according to its Web site. The group has produced an annual "Green Cars" guide since 1998.

The 747-8 is the largest and newest 747 version, the longest passenger aircraft in the world. The 747-8 is offered in two main variants: the 747-8 Intercontinental (747-8I) for passengers and the 747-8 Freighter (747-8F) for cargo. he aircraft will be capable of carrying up to 467 passengers in a 3-class configuration over 8,000 nmi (15,000 km) at Mach 0.855.

The 747-8 Intercontinental will have the lowest seat-mile cost of any large commercial jetliner, with 12 per cent lower costs than its predecessor, the 747-400. The airplane provides 16 per cent better fuel economy, 16 per cent less carbon emissions per passenger and generates a 30 per cent smaller noise footprint than the 747-400.

The 747-8 applies interior features from the 787 Dreamliner that includes a new curved, upswept architecture giving passengers a greater feeling of space and comfort.

The entrance to the plane has a wide-open foyer area that includes a curved staircase to the upper deck.

Korean Air has joined launch customer Lufthansa in ordering a total of 33 747-8 Intercontinentals. First delivery of the 747-8 Intercontinental is scheduled for the fourth quarter. Air China also has agreed to order five Intercontinentals, pending government approval.

Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division pledged late last year that it would partner with Italian superbike manufacturer Ducati in a number of marketing activities. Apparently, this new promo spot for the new 2012 C63 AMG Coupe appears to be one of the brand’s first car-bike tie-ins.

Our film opens with a close-up of a stylish man, who walks onto the porch of his stylish Oceanside home, and surveys the seaside below. Suddenly, an equally stylish female companion — previously seen sleeping in bed — appears, carrying keys, a motorcycle helmet, and a single question:

“Are you ready?”

A smirk must double as an affirmative answer, as the camera quickly cuts to the garage. General Motors introduced the Orlando, a concept MPV, at the Paris Motor Show, 2008; the production version of the MPV was showcased at the 2010 Paris Auto Show and reports say that it will commence sales in early 2011. The concept version was a seven seater affair and possessed a crossover like build. The Orlando shares the same platform of Chevrolet Cruze.

If media reports are to be believed, the Chevrolet Orlando is supposed to replace Chevrolet Tavera. After discontinuing the Tavera in most of the BS III cities, there remains a void from Chevrolet side. The Orlando will be competing with the likes of Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo and other India bound mini MPV like Maruti R3, Nissan NV200, Hyundai ic25 and Ford B-Max. This yet-to-be launched Chevrolet MPV would be loaded with a 1.8 litre petrol mill and a 2.0 litre diesel powertrain. The 1.8 litre petrol engine is expected to produce a top power of 141 bhp while the 2.0 litre diesel engine would churn out maximum power of 131 bhp via either a 4 speed automatic, 5 speed or 6 speed automatic gearboxes.

Ford Kuga

How Much: Rs 16 lakh approx

The Kuga looks bold and intimidating and is marked by sharp lines all through its body. The engine that will make most sense for India will is a 2-litre TDCi engine that breathes through four valves per cylinder and produces a healthy 136PS and 320Nm of turning force. This 4-pot turbo engine sees the Kuga reach 100 clicks in less than 11 seconds while the top whack should be a shade less than 200kmph. Daimler AG and Rolls-Royce Group Plc are considering a joint bid for Tognum AG, a German maker of heavy-duty engines used in tanks and ships, as they invest cash from booming sales, according to reports from Automotive News Europe and Bloomberg. Rolls-Royce Group Plc is an aviation and industrial engine manufacturer, no longer affiliated with Rolls-Royce automobiles, which is now a subsidiary of BMW.

“Daimler AG confirms that together with Rolls-Royce, it is in discussions about the possibility of acquiring the majority of Tognum AG in equal shares,” Daimler and Rolls-Royce said. “Currently, constructive discussions with the supervisory board and management board of Tognum are being held,” the two companies said in a joint statement.

Gaining control of Tognum, which Daimler previously owned outright, would give the two companies the world’s second-largest maker of high-speed diesel engines for the marine, energy and defense industries after Caterpillar Inc.

Daimler, which supplies Tognum with motors, is already the company’s largest shareholder. The auto manufacturer owns 28 percent of Tognum, which was formerly a wholly owned subsidiary.

As part of the deal, Rolls-Royce would integrate its Bergen diesel and gas engines line with Tognum, a person familiar with the negotiations said. Spokespeople for the companies declined to comment beyond the statement.

Former Honda zone manager to lead Saab's North American sales

A former Honda zone sales manager will head U.S. sales for Saab Cars North America. James Sweeting has been named the company's executive national sales director, effective March 15.

Sweeting, 50, will report directly to Matthias Seidl, executive director of global sales and aftersales. Seidl also is interim COO for Saab Cars North America.

"We are honored to have Jim join our North American team in a very pivotal year for Saab Cars North America," Seidl said in a statement today. "Jim's extensive automotive sales experience will help rebuild Saab's presence in the North American market, ultimately increasing volume opportunities with our new product portfolio."

Late last year, Saab introduced the redesigned 9-5 sedan. Saab's 2011 9-4 will go on sale this spring, followed this fall with the redesigned 2012 9-5 SportCombi wagon.

The redesigned 2013 9-3 will go on sale in fall 2012. The 9-3 is Saab's volume model.

Sweeting has 27 years of U.S. automotive sales experience. He began his automotive career with Chrysler Corp., and he has spent the past 24 years with American Honda Motor Co. in sales and marketing roles.

Most recently he was zone sales manager in Honda's South Central Zone, responsible for sales and marketing in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.

BMW Officially Unveils BMW i Sub Brand; BMW i3, i8 Coming in 2013

After years of planning and teasing us with Megacity this and EfficientDynamics that, BMW has finally taken the wraps off its BMW i sub brand, the German automaker’s division that will pump out plug-ins and full electric vehicles. The first two vehicles derived from the effort, the BMW i3 and i8, are slated to hit the road sometime in calendar year 2013.
We’ll let BMW AG’s Ian Robertson tell you what BMW i is all about:
“BMW i represents a new movement in premium mobility. With the introduction of this new sub-brand, the BMW Group reaffirms its leadership as the most innovative and sustainable premium car company. The products and services have been conceived around a revolutionary approach: purpose designed and purpose built for sustainable, premium mobility. It’s a new day in our industry; a new era for individual mobility. This is BMW i – Born Electric.” Robertson, BMW AG’s sales and marketing chief, said in a statement announcing the sub brand.
BMW says it has two vehicles, the BMW i3 and BMW i8, in development, and that those vehicles will launch sometime in 2013. Both of these vehicles have also been seen in various forms for a while as Project i ramped up. The i3, which was previously called Megacity, will be a small, urban-oriented vehicle that will be EV only.
The i8 will be the official name for the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics vehicle, a high-performance themed plug-in hybrid. The i8 should be more of a true BMW from a vehicle dynamics and performance standpoint, but with the emissions footprint of a small car.
Both vehicles will be underpinned by BMW’s LifeDrive architecture, what it’s billing as revolutionary construction concept. According to the automaker, an aluminium chassis houses the powertrain, and the passenger cell is constructed using carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
The strong, lightweight construction helps to offset the weight associated with the battery packs, which should both aid range and overall driving dynamics. Both the BMW i3 and i8 will be built at a BMW facility in Leipzig and will also share many common components.
In addition to the actual cars, BMW is spending roughly $100 million to set up a company called BMW i Ventures, which will focus on mobility services designed to enhance the overall driving experience. BMW will continue to develop its own in-house services as well as explore joint ventures. It has already acquired a stake in New York-based My City Way, which provides information on public transportation, parking availability, and local entertainment to some 40 cities in the U.S.

Mitsubishi Motors North America announced that starting Nov. 1, the 2011 Outlander Sport can be test-driven online with the use of an interactive remote control. Mitsubishi claims that this is the first online test drive of its kind, boosting its image as a technologically innovative brand. Dubbed the Mitsubishi Live Drive, this program will enable people to test-drive the new 2011 Outlander Sport in a closed course in Southern California. Beginning Nov. 1, US residents aged 18 and older with a valid driver's license can register at microsite www.outlandersport.com to "test drive" the vehicle through Nov. 10. The Live Drive is part of an integrated marketing campaign that includes TV, print, digital and direct mail.

This campaign will be launched on Oct. 15. Live Drive is the product of the collaboration between Mitsubishi’s new creative agency, Omnicom Group's 180, Los Angeles, and production company B-Reel. Robotics expert James Brighton and Web design expert Simon Cave were also part of this team. Mitsubishi's other agencies are WPP's Schematic for digital work and Triaville Communications for public relations.

This campaign is a manifestation of Mitsubishi’s aspiration for its shops to work together, with Mitsubishi's internal marketing operations acting as lead agency. Like other automakers, Mitsubishi has suffered under the economic recession in the last few years. In 2008, Mitsubishi sold 119,000 vehicles in North America, dropping 26% over the previous year. For Mitsubishi, the year 2009 was turbulent, with double-digit sales decreases and increases from month to month.

Once again turning to Facebook, we came across these photos of a TT RS variant we'll never see in our driveway, regardless of how often we click the "Like" button: a DTM-inspired racer that's set to debut in the VLN Endurance series.

Audi has teamed with Raeder Motorsports and will run the car during the last two rounds of the Endurance Championship, held at the Nürburgring. The production version of the Audi TT RS is a blast to drive, so we can only imagine the thrills the competition-spec car provides.

Top Gear has let loose another batch of pics showcasing the SSC Ultimate Aero II. In addition to the tantalizing imagery, we get some facts and figures. For starters, this new Ultimate Aero is powered by a 6.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that can scream up to a 9,000 rpm redline. Power? 1,350 horses, every last drop of which will be needed to hit the targeted top speed of 275 mph. Obviously, this rocketship won't be available for short money; it's going to cost $970,000.

SSC aims to recapture the production car speed record it initially took away from Bugatti, which responded this year by building the Veryron Supersport just to get it back. Shelby Supercars believes the Ultimate Aero II will once again allow it to take back the speed crown.

SSC team isn't simply relying on monster power and a slick Jason Castriota-styled exterior. In a nod to Colin Chapman, the new Aero weighs much less than a Veyron thanks to a handful of engineering feats. The wheels are the world's first one-piece carbon-fiber units and tip the scale at just under 13 pounds. In fact, there's carbon-fiber all over the Ultimate Aero II, with the exception of some aluminum bracing for added safety in the event of a crash. Overall, the car weighs about 2,600 pounds, giving it a power-to-weight ratio nearly double that of the Bugatti Veyron. Those specs pretty much say that it isn't so much a question of whether the SSC Ultimate Aero II car will set a record, only when it'll finally happen.

Peugeot has decided to take a more elegant approach with the design of its top-of-the-line 508 model, ditching the old and odd Peugeot nose in favor of a more attractive new design language. Competing with Volkswagen's B7 Passat and Kia's Optima, which we showed you earlier, the 508 is the first attractive Peugeot saloon in a while.

For consumers in Europe, the new 508 will be available next spring. Its eight engine choices are decidedly diesel-heavy; there are five diesel units and three gasoline options, while in 2012, Peugeot will launch a diesel-electric hybrid version using the same technology found on the 3008 Hybrid4 crossover. For the powertrain and performance info, check out our previous story here.

As far as body styles go, there will be a sedan and a station wagon. The new 508 has to be one of the nicest-looking cars in the mid-size segment; it's a real shame we don't get something like this in the States.

Kia Goes Green in Paris with Sportage Diesel-Hybrid Concept

At this week's Paris Motor Show, Kia displayed the Sportage Mild Hybrid eco concept. Based on the latest generation of the South Korean firm's compact SUV model, the concept hooks up Kia's 1.7-liter turbo diesel engine, which produces 115-horsepower and 260Nm of peak torque, to a 5 kW electric motor with a double layer capacitor.

Kia also made small changes to the Sportage's body to reduce aerodynamic drag and added low-rolling resistance tires. According to the company, the Sportage Mild Hybrid emits just 117 g/km of CO2. Kia did not release fuel economy estimates.

2011 Suzuki GSX-R600 & GSX-R750

You'd be forgiven if you forgot all about the brand spankin' new motorcycles brought into the States by Suzuki last year... because there weren't any. Purse strings were pulled so tightly during the global economic collapse that the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer decided not to bring in any new models for 2010.

However, all of that is set to change for 2011, and the first major announcement from Suzuki are updates to its GSX-R600 and GSX-R750. Interestingly enough, the engines are all new but there isn't actually any more horsepower than before – 123 horses from the 600 and 148 from the 750.

Instead of more peak power, Suzuki focused all of its efforts on reducing weight, lopping off four pounds from the motor, three pounds from the exhaust and another three pounds from the aluminum frame. Add it all up and Suzuki has cut about 20 pounds from each model, with the 600 coming in at 413 pounds wet and the 750 tipping the scales at 416 pounds.

Another notable feature new for 2011 are the brakes: 310mm fully-floating front brake discs and radial-mount, four-piston Brembo monoblock calipers. Styling closely mimics that of the range-topping GSX-R1000, featuring new vertically stacked headlamps; see for yourself in our high-res image gallery below. Pricing comes in at $11,599 for the 600 and $11,999 for the 750, and full details can be found after the break.

Audi Quattro Concept

Here they are folks, the first live images we've managed to snap of the Audi Quattro Concept that's currently being debuted at the Paris Motor Show. We expect to get much more closely acquainted with the machine over the next couple of days, but until then, take a gander at the machine that Audi crafted to celebrate 30 years of Quattro performance.

Keep in mind that this sucker is packing 408 horsepower from its turbocharged five-cylinder engine and routing all those ponies through a six-speed manual gearbox to all four wheels, making for a power-to-weight ratio on par with that of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI. Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Concept

After many teaser shots and leaked images, Lamborghini finally took the wraps off its new Sesto Elemento conceptual supercar during the Volkswagen Group's pre-show event in Paris. We'll have more photos of the car from Lamborghini's Paris Show stand tomorrow, but for now, hit the jump to check out the first batch of real-life pictures from the unveiling.

As a reminder, the Sesto Elemento is a Gallardo-sized concept boasting an extremely lightweight construction thanks to advanced carbon-fiber technology. It tips the scales at just 999 kg (2,202 lb) and is powered by the same 570-horsepower V10 engine found in the Gallardo Superleggera.

KTM Announces 2011 X-BOW R Model with 300HP

Austrian motorcycle specialist KTM is hard at work on the 2011 model year version of its X-BOW track-focused sports car, which will gain a higher performance R model. The original 790 kg (1,742 lb) X-BOW is powered by an Audi-sourced 240HP 2.0-liter TFSI. Around 500 have been sold worldwide since it was launched into the market in 2008.

The R model will have an additional 60 hp (45kw) over the standard model thanks to the adoption of the more powerful 2.0 TFSI from the Audi S3, which features changes to the engine electronics and peripherals to bump output to 300-horsepower.

It will be available in two equipment packages: a road legal / homologated "Sport" package and a more track orientated "Race" pack.

Many of the parts that go into the R will be available through X-BOW's PowerParts, so owners can tune their existing X-BOW to Sport and Race specifications.

According to Road & Track, Honda may have its heart set on cranking out a new droptop sports car to keep the brand alive in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the new racer isn't likely to be anything like the much-loved S2000. No, instead, R&T's sources point to a convertible version of the CR-Z. The recipe calls for the platform to retain its front-wheel-drive layout, though a more powerful drivetrain would likely be fitted to lug around the additional weight of bracing and a folding top.

If the car made it to production, it would theoretically go toe to toe with the long-reigning Mazda MX-5 in a battle that we can only assume would be over before either car got to the track. Should the CR-Z-based car prove successful, Honda would then look into building a more potent, rear-wheel drive hybrid sports car. You know, what the CR-Z should have been all along.

2011 GMC Acadia Denali

GM announced today that the production of the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali began at the Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant. Set to arrive at U.S. dealerships in late September, the new 2011 Acadia Denali will be priced from $43,220, excluding destination charges. GMC will offer consumers the exclusive Denali trim line on the award-winning Acadia, and the new car comes with a new lower front and rear fascias, high-intensity discharge headlamps, body-color lower cladding and rocker moldings, unique body-side moldings with chrome accents and Denali badges and dual chrome exhaust tips.

The design is completed by the new 20-inch wheels as well as by the new five exterior colors: Quicksilver Metallic, Summit White, Carbon Black, Red Jewel Tintcoat and White Diamond Tricoat. MINI Scooter E Concepts - First Official Photos

Just after Smart published the first real life pictures of its 'escooter' study, MINI went ahead and released official photos of its take on the pure electric scooter concept. To be precise, the BMW Group owned maker will display three individually colored and trimmed versions of its lithium-ion battery-powered scooter study at next week's Paris Motor Show.

One of the Scooter E Concepts is themed after the MINI E electric car, the other is finished in a classic British Racing Green with a brown-colored leather seat and the last pays homage to the UK Mod subculture.

The MINI Scooter Es borrows some styling cues from the firm's automobile range including the headlamp and mirror designs.

Like Smart's scooter concept, the MINI models also utilize a smartphone that slots between the handlebars offering its service as a navigation system among other things.

Anderson Germany’s package for the F430 Scuderia Edition features technological innovations that offer a higher level of safety and agility. This sports car is equipped with high performance tires and it has an exclusive stealth look coating that resembles the look of a jet plane. It also offers an elaborate interior design. But before you think it’s all fluff, the tuning firm has boosted the strength of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia and has made it sportier.

To increase output to 575 hp, Anderson Germany fitted it with a weight reduced valve commanded stainless steel exhaust system (with three adjustable by remote control sound levels – 24 kg/53 lb. of weight saving). It also gets a sports air filter that with these other features, offer software optimization. The supercar’s exclusive style threepart 8.5x20 and 12x20 light alloy black rims combined with 235/30-20 front and 325/25-20 rear high performance tires result to a controllable speed of more than 300 kmph/190 mph.

PPI Unveils Audi R8 V10-Based Razor GTR-10

We’ve never expected that freaks out there want Audi R8 to command more horses. Yes, for those who deem V10 model too ordinary, Germany based tuner, PPI Automotive, has taken Audi R8 V10 and overhauled it as a whole. The improvements are two sided: optimizing the power to weight ratio Audi R8 V10 while simultaneously strengthen the motor, increase performance, and improve handling dynamics on one hand and enhancing the looks of the vehicle – inside and outside – on the other. And the result appears in the form of PPI Razor GTR-10 Limited Edition.

While talking about performance, the power of Audi R8 V10 has been increased from 525 to 601hp while the torque reaches 417 ft-lbs in comparison to 391ft-lbs. Engine is now mated to a modified R-tronic Gearbox. Equally impressive is the PPI Razor GTR-10 getting a sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds, thanks to the massive 250kg reduction which is attributed to a ton of carbon fiber components, including all new doors, roof pillars, side skirts and front bumper. The tuned Audi R8 has a top speed of 335km/h.

The other modifications include a modified side skirts, rear fenders, a rear bumper, and the replacement parts include an adjustable rear spoiler and rear diffuser. Also, the engine bay features a carbon fiber cover while the trunk sports carbon fiber ram-charged air inlets. The vehicle also feature a MAG11 forged aluminum PPI 19×9-inch sized wheels wrapped with 245/35/19 Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires upfront, while at the rear there are 20×12-inch wheels with 325/25/20 matching tires.

Additionally, PPI developed a special high-performance braking system for the Razor GTR-10 that can be identified by its orange metallic brake calipers. The height of the car is adjustable up to 1.75 inches with the help of the KW Automotive springs and a hydraulic lift system for the front axle. The carbon fiber treatment has been meted out even in the whole of the cockpit; hand-brake lever, door sill protectors, driver and radio console surround, door trims, center console inserts, and kneepad trims. Lightweight folding seats are also made of carbon fiber and bear the PPI “Sport Identity” style, which is present in the headliner, the steering wheel, shift knob, door panels and center console.

Peugeot EX1 Concept

Prior to the 2010 Paris Motor Show, Peugeot revealed today the EX1 Concept, a new 100% electric concept car which promises to show the new design directions of the French manufacturer. Celebrating Peugeot’s 200th anniversary, the new car is powered by two electric motors, capable to deliver a total output of 250 kW or 340 hp. The all-wheel drive two-seater roadster incorporates Peugeot’s new stylistic design codes, which were first seen on the SR Concept, unveiled back in March at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

Furthermore, the car features polished aluminum components seen on the RCZ and BB1 Concept. The new EX1 Concept has a height of just 0.9 meters and a width of 1.77 m. What is more interesting is found under the design, where the car features two electric motors, one on each axle, each delivering 125 kW (250 kW / 340 bhp in total) as well as a maximum torque of 240 Nm. And because this car is just a design study, the passengers have to climb into the passenger compartment using a reverse-opening door.

PPI Unveils Audi R8 V10-Based Razor GTR-10

After a rather long product winter, 2011 is shaping up to be a big year for Jeep. Obviously, the biggest news from Chrysler's off-road brand has been the introduction of the 2011 Grand Cherokee, and after driving the new all-roader (twice), we've learned that the automaker is still fully capable of delivering competitive, well-rounded products. But beyond the Grand Cherokee, Chrysler has made tweaks to both its Jeep Wrangler and Patriot for the 2011 model year, and we spent some time this morning at the Pentastar's Technical Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan, to see what all the fuss is about.

Looking at both the Wrangler and Patriot from the outside, you won't immediately notice the new changes these vehicles receive for 2011. The Patriot receives a slight styling update – a cleaner front end with repositioned fog lamps is up front, body cladding has been added to the sides and a new rear bumper is found out back. The Wrangler has even less in the way of exterior visual updates, save the new body-colored hardtop available on the Sahara trim level.

Jeep Wrangler windshield surroundWhat really impresses us, though, is the larger attention to detail in both of these vehicles. On the Wrangler, for example, little kitschy add-ons like an off-loading Jeep integrated into the windshield outline (pictured right) or the seven-slat grille design for the sun-blocker behind the rear-view mirror. Little things like this are only part of the story, though – the new interiors that both of these vehicles receive are seriously worthy of your consideration.

Wranglers get an updated dash with softer, rounder shapes, and although hard plastics are still used throughout, it fits with the SUV's bad-to-the-bone attitude. Still, new improvements for 2011 include the addition of optional leather seating and Jeep's new corporate steering wheel.

The Patriot, on the other hand, gets a full host of updates, with soft-touch materials used throughout the cabin. Chrysler says that specific touch points have been enhanced in the Patriot to rid the interior of cheap-feeling buttons and knobs, and the new seats (both leather and cloth) are really comfortable. It's a huge, much-needed leap forward for the Patriot, and it makes it much more competitive against vehicles like the Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape.

Snakes are known to regularly shed their skin to reveal a shimmering new coat underneath. Doing it the other way around would be a unique trick, but if the latest reports are to be believed, that might be what we're looking at.

Last week at a dealers' conference, Fiat/Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne reportedly pulled the covers off a new-generation Dodge Viper. With the current model having already been axed, our interest was, to say the least, piqued by this development. New reports emanating from the exclusive preview have given us cause for a little more consternation, however.

According to AutoWeek, the new Viper – expected to arrive sometime late next year as a 2012 model – looked eerily like an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione with a more Dodge-like front end. That would be a shame, since the Alfa's styling is its biggest asset; its chassis and performance dynamics, less so. Giving the 8C – based, as it is, on age-old Maserati architecture – a new shell and calling it a Viper strikes us as all kinds of wrong. Then again, like a great many rumors in the autosphere, this could all be mere conjecture.

“Credo E-Bone” Eco Concept for Public Transport

This interesting concept of eco bus “Credo E-Bone” was designed by Hungarian designer Peter Simon. This zero-emission bus runs on hydrogen fuel cells and lithium batteries to add sustainability to the public transportation. Powered by four in-wheel electric motors “Credo E-Bone” carries its power sources on its roof. The shell of the bus has been made from lightweight composite plastic that resembles a skeleton structure. Such lightweight construction makes the concept energy-efficient. Hope soon such eco bus will be significant part in eco travel.

2010 Paris Preview Lotus unveils hybrid Elite

Another car added in the list of vehicles unveiled before their debut at 2010 Paris Motor Show is Lotus Elite. The hybrid car has a 2+2 seating arrangement and is equipped with monster 5.0 liter V8 engine producing a mammoth 620 PS and 720 Nm of torque, reminding us of Aston Martin’s DB9. The car is able to sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.5 to 3.7 seconds with its top speed locked at 315km/h.

Lotus’s elite is a hybrid car (optional) linked to a hybrid transmission comprising two electric motors and an epicyclic gearbox and is directly aimed at challenging Porsche, Ferrari and Aston Martin brigade with a price tag touching the £100,000-plus sector. The rear wheel drive weighs 1650kg and has a 215 g/km CO2 emissions level. If we compare these figures to DB9, they are 80kg and 40% less respectively.

Featuring a front mid mounted engine structure, Lotus Elite measures 4.60m in length (10cm less than DB9), 1.90m in width and 1.32m in height. The vehicle will feature Lotus’s own-design touch-screen for all major functions and is expected to be released in the spring of 2014. The hybrid vehicle will be made both as a fixed-head coupe and with a retractable hard-top. No word on whether there will be a full convertible or not.

Honda RS125 is officially world’s fastest in 125 category

Honda RS125-powered streamliner with 41bhp has just achieved a mile stone of being fastest in its category. Yes, the feat was achieved by Scott Kolb who rode the bike to get a two-way average speed of 146.77mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats, thus breaking a 27 year old record of 136.1mph. For this purpose, Scoot custom framed the racer and equipped it with radically altered geometry and a 98-inch wheelbase that allows the rider and engine to fit between the tiny wheels.

The custom built bike has the center of gravity barely higher than the axles, which is helped by hub-center steered front end. Other alteration to prepare for the attempt include reducing the Martin Eurosports-built 1996 Honda RS125’s power from 41bhp to 36bhp, stretching it 40inches, fitting it with a radically streamlined fairing and water-to-water chillers replaced the un-aerodynamic radiator, which allowed the frontal area to be reduced by one square foot.

Swiss UAV (Unmanned Ariel vehicle) has come up with KOAX X-240 & the unmanned helicopter NEO S-300, all in white shade. The sleek looking KOAX X-240 has been designed with a co-axial rotor system and the unmanned helicopter retains all the capabilities of a helicopter without compromising on its small size.

Made out of carbon composite and featuring multiple openings for easy maintenance and exchange of its modular mechanical and electrical components, KOAX X-240 has its dimension at 165×50x95(L x W x H). The KOAX X-240 rotor diameter 2.4 meters and can take-off a maximum 45kg weight.

NEO S-300 body, on the other, is based on a dolphin giving it a streamlined fusiform body. Its dimensions are at 275×95x86(L x W x H), a rotor diameter of 3meters and its nose has a payload area that can carry the electronics like camera, laser, radar systems etc. NEO also has, like in KOAX X-240, removable lids that give easy access to the modular guts and its outer shell made of carbon composite. Its maximum payload capacity is 75kg.

Italy's equivalent of America's Blue Angels is called the Frecce Tricolori, or Tricolor Arrows. Otherwise known by its official name, the 313th Gruppo Addestramento Acrobatico, the aerobatic team celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The squad recently brought the smoke and cartwheels with its fleet of Aeromacchi MB-339 jets, while Pagani added a little extra razzle-dazzle by taking its special edition Tricolore Zonda to the Rivolti Air Force base for some fun-and-gun. Caterham launches Roadsport 125 Monaco Special Edition

Caterham is ready to release another "entry-level" special edition Seven in order to celebrate the amazing city-state that is Monaco. Called the "Roadsport 125 Monaco", this Seven gets a unique paint scheme representing the Monegasque flag to highlight its aluminum body; also, "Monaco" is pasted down the side if people can't make the connection.

Inside, you'll find black leather with red stitching to complement the exterior. While black and red usually looks good and needs no reason to exist on a car, Caterham says that in this car, it's meant to symbolize "the roulette wheels found in Casino Square".

Power for Caterham's latest seats-on-wheels open fun machine is the basic 1.6 liter Ford Sigma inline-4 with 125 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque; the engine's mated to a 5-speed transmission.

Caterham says the mill can push the 500 kg (or 550 kg, if going by the website) car to 112mph (181km/h) and produces "a power-to-weight ratio of 227bhp per tonne", allowing it to complete the zero to 60mph (96km/h) sprint in 5.9 seconds.

The car also supposedly comes with a weather kit that makes it "thoroughly enjoyable in any conditions"; if it's raining, why don't we just take the Rolls instead?

The Wright Brothers are often given most of the recognition for the first powered flight but Gustave Whitehead, Alexander Feodorovich Mozhaiski, Clement Ader, and many others should get a share of the fame, too. Whoever is responsible, it wasn’t long before the skies were full of sputtering, creaking, and – for the most part – very unreliable aeronautical devices.

It took the first world war to change aircraft from a killing and maiming hobby for the rich to a killing and maiming war machine. War helped advance the science of flight and necessitated bigger planes.

One monster plane of that time was Igor Sikorsky's Ilya Murometz, a huge improvement over his legendary Russky Vitaz, the first four engine aircraft. But the Ilya Murometz didn't begin as a beast of the skies. Originally designed as a luxurious passenger liner featuring electric lighting, heat, a bathroom, and even a glass floor, the bomber must have been amusing as well as terrifying to its wealthy passengers.

In the years between wars, airplanes kept getting bigger. Outrageous concepts like Norman Bel Geddes Airliner Number 4 appeared, featuring 9 decks of luxury hotel accommodation, bars and engine rooms:

But let us get back from aviation dreams to reality. Take the elegant Handley Page HP42, for instance: a four-engined beauty with an impressive track record of no crashes while being used as an airliner -- which gives you an idea of how safe it was to fly back then.

One of the larger and more beautiful aircraft in the next few decades was the awesome 1936 Boeing Stratoliner. Unfairly called a ‘whale’ because of its chubbiness, the plane was not only huge but also state of the art; today we enjoy flying in pressurized comfort because of technology premiered in the silver flying fish of the Stratoliner.

Another aircraft both immense and legendary - The H-4 Hercules. Arguably the standard by which “huge aircraft” are measured –- as well as how "completely screwed up" is defined. Its one and only flight was in 1947, where it flew for around a mile, reaching altitude of 70 feet. Originally planned as the ultimate military transport, it is more commonly known as its hated -- at least by its creator Howard Hughes -- moniker, the Spruce Goose.

The aircraft had originally been ordered by the US government during World War II as a giant cargo plane for the armed troops and tanks. Howard Hughes's creation was the world's largest plane at the time and is still the largest flying boat ever built. It also holds records for the largest wingspan at 97.5 meters, tallest airplane at 24.2 meters, and the largest aircraft ever made from wood.

Nazi's Ugly Brute

Art and elegance may have been one of the early fatalities in the second world war, but striving to have the biggest (anything) certainly wasn’t.

To call the Messerschmitt Me 321 big is like calling 1939 to 1945 unpleasant. Created originally as a glider, the Gigant could haul an insanely large amount of cargo. And an insane bunch of soldiers: 130 plus hardware ... 23 tons of hardware.

Because the Gigant was so huge, getting the damned thing into the air was, at best, problematic. First it was towed up with a pair of Heinkel 111 bombers, which was alternatively unsuccessful or disastrous. Then they tried fusing two 111s together to make a Frankenstein’s monster of a machine –- almost as bestial as the Gigant itself. Finally the Luftwaffe stuck engines on the Me321, which made an ugly brute even uglier but at least it got off the ground.

Heavy Bombers of the (Potential) Doomsday

On the other side of the war was an eagle, a silvery steel bird of prey: the huge and beautiful B-29 Superfortress. Although getting the immense B-29 up to its ceiling of 40,000 feet was a struggle, once it got up there nothing could reach it or, at 350 mph, catch it. Even if something managed to come close to it, its formidable defenses could cut any threat to shreds. Featuring many impressive advancements, and some frustrating problems, the plane was kept on active duty long into the Korean war.

With the advent of jet power, aircraft designers began to think really big. Think of your average doomsday film and you immediately picture the roaring ascent of smoke-blasting, eight-engined, B-52 bombers. But before B-52 there was another huge American bomber: Convair B-36 "Peacemaker":

Like the B-29, the B-52 "Stratofortress" was an aeronautical powerhouse, a heavy-lifting behemoth. And like the B-52, it was kept in service until … well, they are still being used today.

Heavy bombers transforming into LEGO pieces in the minds of dazed Cold War engineers:

Arthur Kimes writes to us: "Soviets also proposed to stick together a bunch of big airplanes to make a REALLY huge one. Kind of like a Lego dream come true: In the early-mid 1950s the USAF had a plan to link 3 B-36s (wingtip to wingtip) to have a extended range delivery system. When this behemoth got close enough to the Soviet Union each would drop off a parasite fighter-bomber (probably the F-92 - which also was never built) and the released FBs would make a high-speed dash and drop a bomb on their targets. The B-36s would split up and return, the F-92s would have to try and find a friendly airfield in Turkey or something like that."

The Ugliest Airplane Ever Built?
The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy looks more like a prop from a Japanese monster movie than a real airplane. The Guppy is also high on the irony meter as it was mostly used to haul nearly-completed components -- of other airplanes.

Nuclear-Powered Lockheed Mothership

Nothing comes close in size to this unbelievable concept developed by Lockheed in the 1970s:

Note small "children" airplanes, attached to its wings... Its hard to imagine anything bigger flying in the skies, still retaining the shape of a common airliner. An aircraft of this size would have to land on water as a titanic "flying boat".

The Biggest Planes Flying Today

Unlike the B-29 and the B-52, which don’t show their size easily, the C-5 Galaxy would look insanely monstrous even on a postage stamp. To give you an idea of the Galaxy’s size, its wingspan is not just longer than the Wright Brothers’ first flight but the beast can also haul 180,000 pounds (which is about 90 tons). The C-5 was the world's largest plane when it was introduced in the late 1960s.

Arguably the biggest plane flying today, or ever, is Antonov An-225, a 6-engine beast that’s not only longer than the first flight in history but could probably carry one, two, or three whole aircraft museums. Numbers don’t mean much but here is an impressive one: the 225 can carry 550,000 pounds, which is 275 tons. Yes, you can say WOW.

2011 Jeep Patriot gets Tweaked, Proves it's all in the Details

Jeep has released images of its freshened-up Jeep Patriot, and it looks like...the Jeep Patriot. Although front and rear fascias have been facelifted, the differences are only noticeable upon very close inspection.

Outside, the Patriot gets a new body-colored grille, standard fog lamps, new 17-inch wheels, lower rear bumper, and a total of four new colors. On the off-road side of things, the 4X4 models receives a one inch increase in ride height.

Underneath, the suspension system has been modified for more comfort with increased damping/rebound rates and a new rear sway bar. Steering was also tweaked.

Like the recently-teased Chrysler 200 sedan that replaces the Sebring, more soft-touch materials will be found within, as well as a new, thicker-rimmed steering wheel with integrated audio / trip controls. The Uconnect Voice Command system will be available across the board, and top-range Latitude X models will get standard automatic climate control.

Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley says, "For 2011, Jeep Patriot is even more appealing to consumers, thanks to rugged new exterior styling, interior enhancements and refinements to the suspension and steering systems."

The 2011 Jeep Patriot will be built at Chrysler's Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois, and consumers will begin to see it populating dealer lots in the fourth quarter of 2010 (aka starting next month). Even though it's only been tweaked a little here and there, the Patriot seems to be shaping up as an interesting compact offering from Jeep.

2012 Ford Focus ST

Earlier this year, Ford promised us a hotter version of the all-new Focus, and at this month's Paris Motor Show, the Blue Oval is sticking to its word.

The 2012 Ford Focus ST will be the brand's first high-performance model developed under the watchful eye of its global performance vehicle team, and while the hatch you see here is being billed as a "design study," make no mistake – this will form the basis of the ST coming to market in early 2012.

Power is provided by an EcoBoost 2.0-liter inline four churning out 247 turbocharged horsepower, and Ford promises that the ST's handling and aural delights will live up to the marque's performance heritage. FoMoCo also makes it clear that the ST is bound for "all global markets from early 2012" so those of us in the States should finally get a crack at what's traditionally been a Euro-only affair.

Joining the Focus ST in Paris will be the new Mondeo and C-Max, both powered by Ford's new range of fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel-powered drivetrains. Make the jump for the full details.

MR Car Design wrings out another 100 Ponies from BMW 335i

Even though the 335i has been on the market for a while now, there seems to be no shortage of new tuning proposals for the BMW model. Today's faster 335i Coupe comes via German tuning firm MR Car Design. Thanks to a custom made sport exhaust system with sport catalysts, a larger intercooler and an optimized ECU for the 3.0-liter turbocharged straight six, output is bumped from 306HP and 400Nm to 406HP and 530Nm.

MR Car Design's 335i comes fitted with deep dish 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance rubber size 235/30 20 at the front axle and 285/25 20 at the rear. A sports suspension package from KW and an original M3 hood are also available from the German tuner.

Strikingly beautiful Aston Martin DB9 gains bling with gold exteriors

Honda did something silly during the launch of its all-new 2011 Odyssey minivan. The automaker built a large autocross-type "track" in the parking lot of San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium and invited journalists to take its latest eight-passenger family hauler for hot laps. It was an interesting "fish out of water" introduction to Honda's fourth-generation people mover.

Designed, developed and manufactured in the United States, Honda considers the 2011 model an "American Odyssey." The domestic development team, owners of 46 Odysseys between them, labored to deliver a minivan with distinctive style, greater interior versatility and improved fuel economy. Did Honda build itself a worthy successor and how did it fair on the autocross?

Ferrari 599 HY-KERS

Sorry, Ferrari purists, but even the mighty Prancing Horse isn't immune to the need to increase fuel economy. According to Autoweek, Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has confirmed that the successor to the Enzo throne will come equipped with a hybrid drivetrain. According to Montezemolo, the electrified supercar will borrow heavily from the company's 599 HY-KERS concept that debuted at this year's Geneva Motor Show. That vehicle used hybrid tech derived from the kinetic energy recovery system that Ferrari experimented with on its F1 vehicles.

Previously, Ferrari has said that the incorporation of a battery pack and an electric motor would allow the company to continue to offer high-cylinder-count engines while offsetting fuel consumption and emissions. The company has also made it clear that it intends to begin moving toward smaller models to further reduce weight.

The news came as Montezemolo announced that he has no intention of moving from his post at Ferrari to greener pastures in the Italian government. The chairman said that he fully intends to stay at the company long enough to help craft the vehicles in the next product cycle, each of which will follow in the footsteps of the Enzo successor.

Porsche 918 Spyder concept gets nod for production

It was just five months back Porsche premiered its stunning 918 Spyder Concept at Geneva Motor Show, and now the concept has got green light for production. As per the details made available by Porsche earlier, plug in hybrid concept will be powered by mid mounted 3.4 liter V8 engine that produces massive 500hp. V8 engine will be supported by two lithium-ion battery powered electric motors, adding additional 218hp to 918’s tally.

Porsche 918 spyder’s front wheels are driven by front electric motor and rear wheels by engine and other electric motor, making this vehicle a four wheel drive. The two-seater flaunts different driving modes: E-Drive, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid and Race Hybrid. And herein the E-Drive mode lets 918 Spyder run on pure electricity for 16 miles. Hybrid mode is for everyday around town driving. In Sport Hybrid mode both powertrains are used and the Race Hybrid mode 918 Spyder Concept out-paces the famed Carrera GT on the Nürburgring.
